1987 - Commodore Bill Melson

 

Ø  Several African-American boaters met and expressed their desire to organize, so the Ebony

Boat Club was founded.

 

1988-

 

Ø  The club structure was established and bylaws adopted.

 

Ø  The Boat/U.S. Cooperating Group Accord was obtained.

     

Ø  The initial procurement of flags and jackets was made.

             

1989-

 

Ø  The first baby, Kelly was born to club members Paul and Lin Boyd.

             

1990-

 

Ø  The initial cruise to Monterey, CA.

             

1991 - Commodore Malcolm Eady

 

Ø  The club was sanctioned as a non-profit social club.

     

Ø  Incorporating the club was completed March 21, l991.

     

Ø  The first Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was established as a fund raiser and was held

            at the Executive Inn, Oakland, CA.

           

1992 - Commodore Otis Loggins

 

Ø  Commodore Loggins located an old ammunition barge and envisioned it as a future home

      for the Ebony Boat Club. The members approved this idea and dream became a reality.

     

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at the Executive Inn, Oakland, CA.

             

1993-

 

Ø  Assessments were paid by each member and the barge was purchased and relocated

      to "J" Dock, Owl Harbor Marina in Isleton, CA, April 10, 1993.

     

Ø  Official club stationery and membership cards were procured.

     

Ø  The club applied for membership in the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association   (PICYA).

     

Ø  The second baby, Allison was born to members Courtney and Lisa Knight.

     

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at Pelican Landing, Oakland, CA.     

 

1994 - Commodore Roy Adger

 

Ø  Completing the clubhouse was Commodore Adger's priority.  Past Commodore Bill Melson

drew up the plans and the work began. We were well on our way.

 

Ø  Official Open House a memorable occasion for EBC was celebrated, June 4, 1994.

       

Ø  The club was officially accepted into PICYA July 1, l994.

       

Ø  The Newsletter became the Beacon, March 26, l994.

     

Ø  The Boatique had its beginning October 29, l994.

       

Ø  Five new members were welcomed into the club.

     

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at the California Ballroom,

            Oakland, CA December 10, 1994.

 

1995-

 

Ø  Numerous projects and repairs to the clubhouse were implemented

and completed.

 

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at the California Ballroom,

Oakland, CA, December 9, 1995.

                       

1996 - Commodore Bill Melson          

           

Ø  Founder's Recognition Day was celebrated at the clubhouse September

28, 1996

           

Ø  Four new members were welcomed into the club.

             

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at "Earl's" in Vallejo, CA,

            December 7, 1996.

             

1997 - Commodore Richard Clark

 

Ø  All flag officers were sent to training seminars.

 

Ø  Additional repairs and improvements were made to the clubhouse.

             

Ø  Five new members were welcomed into the club.

             

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at Humphrey's, Antioch, CA,

             December 6, 1997.

 

1998-

 

Ø  The bar was completed and opened.

       

Ø  Commodore Clark was selected to serve on the PICYA Board of Directors.

            He is the first African-American to serve on this Board in the 102 year history

            Of PICYA, so EBC began its very own Hall of Fame.

 

Ø  Youth Activity Day, "A Whale of a Day on the Delta" was held at the clubhouse

 April 11, 1998.

 

1999 – Commodore Otis Brock

 

Ø  Youth Activity Day was held at the clubhouse April 10, 1999. This even

      included water safety briefings, fishing, water sports, boat rides,

a magic show, lunch and gifts for all.

 

Ø  The club entered the "Mahogany" a beautiful 42 ft vessel owned by our

Captain Dan Gordon in the Opening Day on the Bay Parade, April 25, 1999.

 

Ø  Youth Activity Day was held at Hogback Recreation Park June 16-18, 1999.

 

Ø  The final Youth Activity Day event for the year was held at the clubhouse

            October 23, 1999.

       

Ø  Many major repairs to the galley, bar and the clubhouse in general were

made along with the purchase of new items.

 

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at the Holiday Inn, Emeryville,

CA, December 4, 1999.

             

2000 - Commodore Larry Brown

 

Ø  The most important project facing the new year is locating a new home for

EBC.  We lost our lease.

 

Ø  The first cruise-out was made to Delta Marina, Rio Vista, CA, February

19–21, 2000.

 

Ø  Seven members of the EBC Executive Board and committees attended

the Leadership Conference at the Sequoia Yacht Club, February 26, 2000.

 

Ø  Past Commodore Otis Brock was sworn into the International Order of the

      Blue Gavel (IOBG) at the Pittsburg Yacht Club, February 2000.

           

Ø  EBC was presented a Certificate of Appreciation for one full year of

     perfect attendance at PICYA meetings, February 2000.

           

Ø  EBC was proudly represented in the Opening Day on the Bay Parade by

     Captain James Mitchell, his First Mate Kathy Mitchell and crew aboard the

beautifully decorated “Seafari”, a 32 ft Carver.  They brought home a first

      place win in their category, April 8, 2000.

     

Ø  The very first wedding reception was held in the EBC clubhouse

on May 20, 2000.  Our Past Commodore Roy Adger and our past secretary

       Sandi Galloway were married on the Delta aboard the beautiful “Satin

Doll” belonging to Commodore Adger.  Just one of the many romantic

       highlights of this special day was First Mate Yvonne Bullock tossing

       yellow rose petals on the water while Captain Elbert Bullock played the

couples favorite song “One in a Million”.  The clubhouse was elegantly

decorated with yellow roses throughout as the theme.  The clubhouse

was packed with members, families, guests and many friends gathering

to congratulate Mr. and Mrs. Roy Adger.

     

Ø A two-year lease was signed with Bruno’s Island Yacht Harbor on June 30,

     2000.  The lease became effective July 15, 2000.  EBC has a new home.

     A move date of July 29–30, 2000 was scheduled.

     

Ø  The EBC Scholarship Award for the year 2000 was presented to Tyrone

      Smith at the clubhouse.  Tyrone plans to attend Clark Atlanta University

       in the fall.

       

Ø  EBC officially moved to Bruno’s Island Yacht Harbor, 1200 W. Brannan

Island Road, Isleton, CA 95641.  July 30, 2000.

           

Ø  EBC hosted Juneteenth Day at Hogback

Recreational Park, June 2000.

     

Ø  Youth Activity Day was held at the clubhouse.  Youths from Glide Memorial

Church, San Francisco, CA enjoyed the day, always a special day for EBC,

August 12, 2000.

           

Ø  Past Commodore Richard Clark was nominated and elected to serve as

 the next Rear Commodore of PICYA, October 2000.  Another accomplishment

  to be added to the EBC Hall of Fame.

     

Ø  The final Youth Activity Day of the year was held at the clubhouse.

Christmas dinner, gifts, hanging stockings and fun games were enjoyed

 by many young people December 2, 2000.

 

Ø  Four new members were welcomed into the club this year.

     

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at the Holiday Inn, Emeryville,

             CA, December 9, 2000.  

 

2001 - Commodore Bill Melson

 

Ø  EBC applied for a permanent ABC license, February 2001.

       

Ø  The first cruise-out for the year to Delta Marina, Rio Vista, CA, February

            17–19, 2001.

             

Ø  Seven EBC officers and delegates attended the PICYA Management Seminar

at San Rafael Yacht Club, February 24, 2001.

     

Ø  EBC hosted Juneteenth Day at Hogback Recreational Park, June 15-17,

2001.  Several youths  were entertained with miscellaneous games,

      meals and presented caps as a memento of that special day. 

      There were two church groups and one group home represented.

     

Ø  Two new members were welcomed into the club.

           

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at the California Ballroom,

            Oakland, CA, December 1, 2001.

               

2002-

 

Ø  Past Commodore of EBC Richard Clark was installed as Commodore

of Pacific Inter Club Yacht Association (PICYA) for the year 2002.  This

is definitely an entry for EBC’s Hall of Fame.  He is the first

African-American to receive such an honor.  Richard served as

Commodore of EBC 1997 and 1998.

     

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at the California Ballroom,

Oakland, CA, December 7, 2002.

                       

2003 - Commodore Paul Boyd

 

Ø  Past Commodore of PICYA Richard Clark along with other members

of the Board were invited to be  guests on board the USCGAPSEN

October 11, 2003.

           

Ø  EBC members attended the Fifteenth Annual Change of Watch for

District 19 of the International Order of Blue Gavel  (IOBG) which

was held at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Walnut Creek, CA,

      September 20, 2003. Past Commodore Roy Adger was installed as

      Vice President Elect of IOBG, Lenora Clark installed as Vice President

      and Sandi Adger as Treasurer of IBOGA the spouses auxiliary.

           

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at the Oakland Airport

Holiday Inn on Hegenberger Road, December 6, 2003.

           

2004-

 

Ø  First Youth Activity Day of the year was held at the clubhouse April 3, 2004.

     

Ø  EBC voted to change the date of the Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance

           from December to January.

     

Ø  EBC awarded three one thousand dollar scholarships to deserving students.

     

Ø  Youth Activity Day was held at the clubhouse on August 14, 2004. 

            Our scholarship recipients were invited to attend this event and possibly pass

      on to other youths that their hopes and dreams can be fulfilled.

    

Ø  EBC once again won the PICYA Perfect Attendance Award.

           

Ø  Lenora Clark was appointed by the Governor of California to the position

            of Commissioner for the California Department of Boating and Waterways. 

            Another accomplishment to be added to our Hall of Fame.  Ebony Boat Club

            has produced a number of “firsts” to the boating community.

 

2005 - Commodore Marilyn Brock

 

Ø  Another first and a worthy accomplishment to be added to our Hall of

Fame was the election and installation of Marilyn Brock to Commodore

      of EBC.  This honor was presented to her at the Annual Inaugural

      Dinner Dance January 15, 2005.  Commodore Brock is the very first female

      to ever hold this position.

           

Ø  Past Commodore Roy Adger was appointed President of the International

Order of the Blue Gavel. (IOBG) January 16, 2005.

           

Ø  Staff Commodore Paul Boyd was installed into the IOBG at San Joaquin

Yacht Club, February 13, 2005.  The IOBG is an association of Past or

Staff Commodores of Yacht Clubs throughout the world.  EBC belongs to

Delta District 19.

           

Ø  Ebony Boat Club was presented the Bay and Delta Yachtsman Public Service

Award Trophy.  This award is presented to the members club that has

performed an outstanding community service effort.  It specifically

      honors the club’s efforts in 2004 working with inner city youth.  Past

     Commodore Otis Brock and Commodore Elect Marilyn Brock accepted

     the trophy on behalf of Ebony Boat Club.

           

Ø  Lenora Clark was elected by the RBOC Board to serve as Vice President

of Recreational Boaters of California.

 

Ø  The first Youth Activity Day Event was held at the clubhouse – April 24, 2005.

 

Ø  Juneteenth Day Celebration was held at the clubhouse with approximately 25

            youths attending – June 11, 2005.

 

Ø  The “Enchantment” owned by Commodore Otis and Marilyn Brock was

awarded second prize in the annual PICYA Opening day on the Bay Parade.

 

Ø  EBC hosted the International Order of Blue Gavel (IOBG) District’s Board

and Delegate meeting.

 

Ø  Final Youth Activity Day Event was held at the clubhouse with 19 young

adults attending from Covenant House in San Francisco. – October 8, 2005

 

Ø  Bianca J. Munroe was presented the EBC Scholarship Award for the year 2005.

 

Ø  EBC was presented 2 awards from Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC)

            : delegates achieving 5 years of Perfect attendance and RBC becoming a Two

           Star Club.

 

Ø  Commodore Brock presented a plate and a large trophy to Past Commodore

Richard Clark, the first African American to serve as Commodore of PICYA

and also the Yachtsman’s Trophy of the Year Award.

 

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at the Hilton Garden Inn

(formerly Holiday Inn), Emeryville, CA, January 14, 2006.

 

2006 – Commodore George Spencer

 

Ø  The first Youth Activity Day Event for the year was held at the clubhouse

with 17 youths from the East Bay Baptist Church attending.  The ages ranged

from 6 to 17.

 

Ø  A truly sad day for EBC was losing one of our Founders and our Past Commodore,

Captain Roy L. Adger, Sr.  He passed away 25 February 2006.  Several members

attended the service to support Sandi, his wife and the rest of his family. 

Commodore Adger was truly a great man of vision and accomplishment, and he

will truly be missed.

 

Ø  The “Enchantment” owned by Past Commodores Marilyn and Otis Brock again

represented EBC at the annual Opening Day on the Bay Parade and was awarded

second place for powerboats decorated in the theme, Mardi gras, April 30, 2006.

 

Ø  Juneteenth Day Celebration was held at the clubhouse June 10, 2006 with 45 youths

participating.

 

Ø  EBC moved from Bruno’s Island Yacht Harbor, Isleton, CA to a location at San Joaquin

Yacht Harbor, 3307 Wilbur Ave, Antioch, CA, August 2006.  The club has been very busy

getting settled in and making necessary repairs.  The election for 2007 officers will be

held October 28,2006 at our new location.

 

Ø  The final Youth Activity Event of the year was held 14 Oct 2006 at the clubhouse.  Boat  rides and fishing were the highlights of the day.

Ø  Past Commodores Marilyn and Otis Brock represented EBC at the annual International Order of the Blue Gavel (IOBG)convention in Long Beach, CA, 25-29 Oct 2006.

Ø  The EBC Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance was held at the Pleasanton Hilton. Pleasanton, CA, 13 Jan 2007.

  2007

 

Ø  Lenora Clark, president of Recreational Boaters of California (RBOC) and also a member of EBC was awarded the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PICYA) Silver Star at the PICYA Change of Watch on 27 Jan 2007 for her work on behalf of boaters throughout the state of California.  Another first to be added to EBC’s Hall of Fame list.

Ø  Commodore George Spencer was sworn into membership of IOBG at San Joaquin Yacht Club, 18 Feb 2007.  Also on this date, his First Mate Vera Labat became a member of the IOBG Auxiliary.

Ø  Members of EBC attended the PICYA Leadership Conference held at Aeolian Yacht Club, 3 Mar 2007.

Ø  The first Youth Activity Day Event of the year was held at the clubhouse 10 Mar 2007 with approximately 20 children and 7 adult guests participating.  Fishing, boat rides, water  safety and many other activities were enjoyed by all and of course lots of good foods and gifts.

Ø  EBC was issued their license from the Department of Alcoholic Beverage (ABC) for Contra Costa County.

Ø  The “Enchantment” a beautiful vessel owned by Captains Otis and Marilyn Brock represented EBC in the annual PICYA Opening  Day on the Bay Parade.  The theme for this year was  “The Soul Train” and we won FIRST PLACE in the Power Boat Division.  The super winners received the trophy at Oyster Point Yacht Club, 7 May 2007 which will be on display in the clubhouse for the remainder of this year.  EBC will also receive a plaque which will be kept in the clubhouse permanently.

Ø  Juneteenth Celebration was held at the clubhouse 9 Jun 2007.  Fishing, boat rides, boat tours and safety demonstrations along with lots of good food and gifts were the highlights.

Ø  New Vision Christian Center and St Marks Church were represented.  EBC also made a presentation to the Coast Guard for their support.

Ø  EBC clubhouse was once again a chosen location for the wedding and reception of its  members Keisha Terrell and Marcel Dawson.  Reverend Carlton Booker, EBC’s Secretary  performed the ceremony. This was truly a first.  30 June 2007.

Ø  The final Youth Activity Day Event for the year was held at the clubhouse, 13 Oct 2007. As always fishing, boat rides, good eats and gifts were on the schedule for this event.   Approximately 17-20 young men from the Grace Fellowship Men’s Ministry Group attended. 

Ø  EBC held its first Fishing Derby, Striped Bass and Sturgeon .  20 Oct 2007.

Ø  EBC celebrated its 20th anniversary.  Several former members and guests were present to participate in this memorable event.   We have had 20 glorious years and may we have 20 more.

Ø  The Annual Inaugural Dinner Dance will be held at the Pleasanton Hilton, Pleasanton, CA 12 Jan 2008.

2008 - Commodore Eddie Jo Mack
